| Chambers Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1JF. Labels marking 500 years of printing in Scotland have been put by objects relating to the printing trade in the Museum of Scotland. These include; the rotary press, exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and invented by Thomas Nelson of the Edinburgh firm; a 1/4 scale model of a paper making machine, made by George Bertram of Edinburgh; and other exhibits related to printing, bookbinding and papermaking, including a model of the Albion press. From this place words fly, Kenny Munro and Edward O’Donnelly. Artists Kenny Munro and Edward O’Donnelly have created this evocative film to celebrate Scotland’s rich printing history. It is inspired by the ambitions and skills of the first printers and the rapid increase in printing expertise over the last 100 years. By merging old and new technologies, the artists invite us to consider the future of the printed word in an increasingly global culture. This project is a partnership between National Museums Scotland and National Trust for Scotland. The film includes footage from Scottish Screen, Robert Smail’s Printing Works at Innerleithen and Powderhall Foundry in Edinburgh. Running time: 7 minutes. Sound track: FOUND, an artist collective/experimental pop band. www.nms.ac.uk |

| Press Here, Coupar Angus | |
'Press Here' is a small traditional letterpress workshop using the same hand-set lead type process that Andrew Myllar brought to Scotland and which survived largely unchanged in principle for nearly the full 500 years since then. Visitors are welcome to call in and see the process in action, handle some of the tools and materials, and possibly even make a print themselves. The workshop uses largely 20th century equipment (including some typecasting machines). So if you want to find out what a Stereotype, a Fudge Box, a Hell Box, or a Slug are, or why your computer offers you ‘Times New Roman’ and measures its size in ‘points’, call in and satisfy your curiosity. Admission free, but please phone 01828 628001 in advance to arrange a visit. Open almost every Monday. Most times can be accommodated, but the workshop will be closed on Sundays and throughout August. Parking space and disabled access. |
